Council Highlights - May 26, 2025
Scugog – Township of Scugog Council held a public Council Meeting this week, May 26. The meeting covered a variety of topics, please see the highlights below:
- In our ongoing efforts to secure funding for community needs, Council has asked staff to submit a grant application request to Hydro One’s Durham Kawartha Power Line Project Fund to assist with funding a new playground at Cartwright Fields. The power line project provides funding for community projects located near the hydro corridor upgrades. In Scugog, the area of Nestleton in Ward 4 is close to the project location, making the playground eligible for funding.
- Council has endorsed the Scugog Asset Management Plan for continued support of investment in our roads and capital infrastructure. The Mayor acknowledged the challenges presented by limited growth and a daunting financial outlook, emphasizing the strain on the current tax base. She stressed the need for the municipality to do more, urging exploration of new strategies to grow the tax base with the goal of helping close the funding gap without placing additional burden on residents and businesses through increased taxation.
- Witness Blanket Exhibit –Sharon Woodrow, Trinity-St Andrew’s United Church, provided a delegation on May 5 that included information on the Witness Blanket, a powerful art installation created by master carver Carey Newman to recognize the atrocities of the residential school era, honour the children and symbolize ongoing reconciliation. The delegate noted that an official replica of the exhibit will be housed in Cannington from September to October 2025, open six days a week from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., closed Mondays. Council was invited to attend and help promote the exhibit. The delegation can be viewed through the May 5 General Purpose and Administration Committee Meeting livestream, starting around the 1:31:05 mark.
