Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment

Scugog Firefighters are community leaders in fire safety and emergency preparedness.

Recruitment Selection Process:

Phase 1: Application submission

Phase 2: Selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. At this time, candidates must provide proof of immunization and a copy of a valid Ontario driver's license.

Phase 3: Aptitude, medical and clinical assessment through OFAI Testing Stages One and Two 

Phase 4: Job-Specific Physical Appraisal

Phase 5: Selection and condition of job offers. At this time, candidates must provide a criminal record check and driver's abstract.

Phase 6: Comprehensive recruitment training period

 

Applications are due by August 30, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications Include:

  • 18 years of age or older and legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Resident of Scugog with availability to respond in a timely fashion, including on weekends and holidays. 
  • Full vaccinations for all of the following: MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Polio, Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, Tetanus and COVID-19.
  • No convictions under the Canadian Criminal Code for which a pardon has not been granted.
  • Satisfactory driver's abstract dated within three months of the application date.
  • Prescribed 20/30 uncorrected vision in each eye without corrective lenses, as well as colour vision and unaided hearing.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or academic equivalent. 
  • Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English - oral and written.
  • Ability to perform the duties of a firefighter, both physically and mentally, with the utmost regard for both personal and public safety. 
  • Willing to participate in community fire & life safety education events. 

  • Graduate of a Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program from an accredited community college or an equivalent approved learning institute, with valid certifications in NFPA 1001 Firefighter I and II and NFPA 1072 Hazmat Awareness and Operations. 
  • Valid DZ driver's license or equivalent.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR level HCP (Health Care Provider).
  • Post-secondary education and/or specialized skills and trade certifications. 
  • Work experience including previous firefighting or emergency service experience. 
  • Flexible work schedule with the ability to respond to emergency calls at various hours.
  • Fluency in a second language (including sign language). 

  • A Volunteer Firefighter will be expected to successfully complete an 18 month conditional period and should be committed to a program of continuous learning.
  • Volunteer Firefighters will attend scheduled training programs, community events, provide an emergency response, and fulfill assigned weekend summer stand-by commitments. 
  • Volunteer Firefighters are paid an hourly rate for attendance at approved events.
  • Volunteer Firefighters are provided with a pager, full personal protective equipment, station wear and additional coverage through VFIS Insurance.
