Joe Fowler North Ball Diamond Light and Pole Removal

Please be advised the lights and poles at the Joe Fowler North Ball Diamond in downtown Port Perry will be removed.

The lights and poles that are currently on-site were erected 55 years ago, and staff have been closely watching the state of the infrastructure and conducting annual inspections with contractors to evaluate their structural integrity. During this year’s inspection, our lighting contractor determined that due to the wear and tear that has accumulated, the poles are at the end of their useful life. Many of the poles have large cracks, and along with the massive weight of the metal halide lights, the poles and lights have been deemed a safety issue and must be removed.

Phase one of the work will be to remove the lights. Removal work will be underway January 30, 2025, and will take a few days. The area will be closed for a short time while the lights are removed, however, impact to the overall area will be minimal. We ask that visitors respect the construction area when removal is underway, and to avoid the area for your safety and the safety of the contractors.

Staff will be contacting ball diamond users to accommodate their night game scheduling needs through other diamonds in the township. We are also aware of osprey nesting in the area and are investigating options to create a new habitat.

The removal will not impact the operations of our lakefront skating rink. Skating is expected to resume by the weekend.
