Join us for the 2025 Scugog Operating Budget Open House on Monday, January 6, 6:30 p.m. at the Scugog Community Recreation Centre, 1655 Reach Street, Port Perry. The Township Operating Budget outlines our spending plan for the upcoming year in order to deliver services to our residents. This includes the day-to-day costs of running the township:
• Fire and Emergency services
• Township Facilities (e.g., Scugog Arena, Blackstock Recreation Complex, Birdseye Aquatic Facility, Scugog Public Library, Scugog Shores Museum and Town Hall)
• Recreation programs
• Road maintenance
• By-law enforcement
• Transfers to reserves
These costs are covered by the Township of Scugog’s portion of the overall property taxes collected. When paying property taxes, 55% goes to the Region of Durham and 12% goes to the School Board, making the Township of Scugog’s share of your property tax bill 33%.
This year, property taxpayers will see an increase of $9.41 per month for the Scugog portion on the average residential property value of $438,000 (please note the dollar amount of increases is reliant on your assessed property value). Of the $9.41, $5.88 of that will go towards infrastructure for capital such as roads and the remaining balance is to provide services such as snow clearing, grass cutting in parks, programs and more.
To review a copy of the draft budget and/or to ask a question about the operating budget, visit my.scugog.ca/budget or send your question by email to “budget@scugog.ca.” Questions sent in advance will be answered by email. Staff will be in attendance to address questions at the open house.
Quote:
“While no one is happy with increased costs, we all recognize that inflation and other external pressures have impacted the cost of doing business. We know that property owners are struggling and as staff we have put forward for consideration a bare bones budget that considers the pressures while maintaining services for Scugog residents.” Laura Barta, Director of Finance
